The Bath County Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 10, 2009 will feature local produce picked for you!

New market hours! 9 AM to 1 PM!

Mark your calendar for the last market of the 2009 season on October 24, 2009! Plan to come help the vendors and our community celebrate Fall and the end of a beautiful summer!

The market is the perfect place to start shopping for that one of a kind Christmas gift!

Regular Vendors will return with plentiful late summer garden fresh produce including pumpkins, gourds, butternut squash, hubbard squash, yellow squash, potatoes, green beans, green peppers, hot peppers, possibly tomatoes, and more.

Baked goods abound.

Salty and Sweet nothing can beat pie! Apple, cherry, blueberry, peach, pumpkin, pecan and peanut butter for starters.

Cake is a tasty treat any time. Try angel food, pound, chocolate, lemon pound, hot milk, lemon poppy seed after dinner on a Saturday night.

And if a cake is to much a cookie might be just the treat. They come in flavors to good to miss: peanut butter, butter balls, oatmeal, banana, sugar, and chocolate chip.

Bread for toasting, buttering, sandwich making: Whole wheat, multigrain, sourdough, salt rising, white.

Update to all you healthy food lovers that may want to taste more healthy food on your plate. As most of you know, I have started another farm enterprise to provide in our local community fresh pastured chicken. If you have never tried this meat chicken you will not want to miss out on this tasting chicken on your families plate. Have another batch available to be processed late October. I have placed a picture of this high octane grass lover birds. Their breast are already plump and the growth these birds have done in 4 short weeks incredible. Take some time and call me or email me for further questions or sign up ….don’t dilly dally just bring home the chicken!

BATH COUNTY FARMERS MARKET TO CELEBRATE FARMERS MARKET WEEK

Governor Timothy M. Kaine has officially recognized August 2 - 8, 2009 as Farmers Market Week in Virginia and the Bath County Farmers Market at Windy Cove Presbyterian Church Picnic Pavilion, Highway 39, 3.5 miles east of Millboro Springs , Virginia is inviting everyone to join the celebration on Saturday, August 8, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 1 PM.

According to Leonard, “The Bath County Farmers Market has planned a wonderful celebration for Farmers Market Week. Locally grown produce will continue to be the reason for the celebration. Local musicians will be on hand to entertain customers with a wide variety of music from bluegrass to country to rock.

“Pat Foreman, a Rockbridge native, will be on hand to sign her newly published book City Chicks and answer questions about raising chickens and egg production. According to Ms. Foreman, “The local foods movement is mushrooming an chickens have become its mascot.” City Chicks brings fresh, innovative and new information about keeping backyard flocks of urban chickens.

“Local crafters will offer a wide variety of beautiful handcrafted products from jewelry to woodcraft to crocheted items.

“There is something for everyone to enjoy plus all the great items our exhibitors are selling this week.”

August is prime time for produce so shoppers will find the freshest and most flavorful fruits and vegetables, ripe and ready right now. Vendors at the Bath County Farmers Market will have fresh-picked, Virginia grown tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, sweet corn, berries, and more. Thanks to shorter travel time, this locally grown produce can retain its exceptional taste and valuable nutrients far better than items shipped long distances.

Besides produce, the Bath County Market will also offer herbs, plants, cut flowers, organic items, cheeses, baked goods, local honey, and homemade preserves. Shoppers can expect an ever-changing variety which is part of the charm of a farmers market.

What will you find at the market this week? The following is by no means an inclusive list of what you will find at the market. Produce is influenced by a wide variety of factors: animals (deer being the worst in our area!), insects, weather (farmers spend half their time wishing it would rain and the other half wishing it would stop), and time (time to sow- time to harvest- sometimes there are just not enough hours in the day!). Some products are waning and others are waxing bountiful.
